Set in the 1680s and ‘90s on the New England frontier, Blood Sisters is the story of two real and extraordinary women, Hannah Duston and her sister Elizabeth Emerson. Against a background of ongoing Indian attacks, witch trials, the struggling frontier, severe families, and hellfire Puritan preachers, the sisters grew up to be courageous, independent, sensual, and rebellious. Each in her time faced very different critical and terrifying situations. In self-defense and for good or ill, they each planned and carried out very dark deeds to save their lives.
Hannah, the elder sister, was captured by the Pennacooks and marched some 100 miles into the wilderness while being harassed, starved and abused. Her violent rebellion differed dramatically from other captivity narratives as Hannah differed from their pious, long-suffering heroines. Hannah was embraced as a model of courage and resourcefulness from New England to Virginia. Her name became a rallying cry for the colonists, who were being attacked, plundered, murdered, and kidnapped.
Hannah’s younger sister Elizabeth led a shockingly dissolute and rebellious life. Ultimately, she was charged with murder and sent to Boston where she languished in jail awaiting sentencing along with the accused witches.
Cotton Mather, a famous Puritan minister, told stories in long sermons about each of the sisters and played a pivotal role in each woman’s career.
Some of these events are part of the historical record—legal records, sermons, genealogies, and letters. The rest of the novel is my own creation. Some records of actual interrogations that seem especially vivid and interesting are included almost verbatim. But I have created the relationship between the two sisters, invented details, shifted events around, and created or fleshed out the minor characters.

As an a historian specializing in the 17th Century and Essex County history in particular, I have long been familiar with Elizabeth Emerson's case and Hannah Emerson Duston's deeds, so immediately downloaded it onto my Kindle when first learning about this book. I was truly impressed with the author's excellent and absorbing presentation of the dramatic and tragic stories of these sisters. Heffernan brought the extended family to life and was able to capably tie their unique & horrifying experiences together through their personal interviews with the Reverend Cotton Mather. Heffernan's solid research is evident throughout. This serious study is admiringly translated into gripping historical fiction through the author's excellent characterization and recreation of early New England life.Product details

Heffernan has the unique ability to bring vividly to life a fascinating piece of little-known American history.
Readers are fortunate that the author unearthed these sisters (at least metaphorically), revived them (in the same fashion), and delivered their incredible story to us.
I read this book over the weekend and could not put it down. The stories of these two women are very compelling and give us real insight into the issues and struggles of the women who lived in the New England Colonies. Credit is often given the men who settled in America but we do not often hear about the strong women who accompanied them. Read Heffernan's "Foreword" and you will not be able to stop!
very interesting, without being dry and hard to get into......likeable characters and really brings to life what it was like to live in that era.
A page turner historical novel based on a true story of the first American frontier. Vividly drawn characters, settings and scenes
Fascinating story based on true events! Being from the area I had heard about the event mentioned.before, but these characters brought it to life for me.
Thrilling, terrifying, illuminating page-turner...set in THE COLONIES. Come on. This story of two murderous sisters--one who killed and scalped the Indians who abducted her, and the other who was an infanticide--is too jaw-dropping to be true. But it IS. Heffernan pulls off this historical novel brilliantly. Don't miss it.
Blood Sisters is a fascinating look into early Colonial America from the perspective of two tough-minded women. Hannah is very much a woman of her time. She is a survivor. Her sister Betty would fit right during our own time period. She's a rebel. It's not a secret to tip off the ending of these two women. Hannah was perhaps the first Colonial woman superhero, because she engineered the escape and killing of her captors (who had killed her three-month old baby by slamming it against a tree). Her kid sister, Betty--independent-minded, sensuous, a born-to-be-free kind of sensibility--was executed for the murder of her newborn twins. But did she do it? Or was she just punished as a free spirit in Colonial America? We know the facts. What we don't know is just what was in the hearts and minds of these two women. That's the part that author Nancy Coffey Heffernan gives the reader. Blood Sisters is an informative as well as entertaining read.
